Our sandy property on the California coast is the kind of soil gophers love, so we are constantly battling to keep them from destroying our trees and shrubs. This 10-pack of metal gopher traps will help keep the problem under control, and we have already used them to eliminate two gophers. The traps are heavy-duty, all-metal, and well-made. The spring is powerful, and the frame is weatherproofed with a green vinyl coating to minimize rust.When we received these, no instructions were included, and I wasn’t familiar with how to use this trap design. However, I quickly found a YouTube video showing step-by-step instructions. It takes strong fingers to set these traps, and caution is advised, as it’s easy to have one edge of the trap slip out of your grasp, allowing the prongs to snap shut on a finger. It’s easier to set these if you have a small piece of plywood or another hard surface to work on, so that you can lean down and use your weight to keep the trap open while maneuvering the trigger into place.Before placing these traps in the ground, I attached a two-foot piece of flexible wire to the back edge of the frame and pushed the other end of the wire through a hole in a foot-long wood stick. This ensures that if a gopher gets a foot caught in the trap and survives, it won’t scurry off with the trap. It also allows me to pull the trap out using the stick without having to reach down and stick my hand in the hole.The one downside to these traps is that they are not as easy to set as the Victor EasySet traps that I usually buy, but these are half the price, and they’re less likely to rust, thanks to the vinyl coating. Priced around $3 per trap at this writing, this 10-pack is a good value if you have a lot of gophers to deal with.
